L-Università ta 'Malta), is the most prestigious institution of higher education in this picturesque island, dates back to more of the middle ages - from 1592. The university was founded by a priest named Garagallo and originally was called the Collegium Melitense. After the expulsion of the Jesuits from the island Grandmaster Manuel Pinto da Fonseca in 1769, was based strictly university itself. But after the capture of Malta, Napoleon's army in 1798, the structure of the institution has changed again. Finally in 1938 by King George VI University was awarded the title of king, however, over time, this title is gradually out of use. More recently, the University has joined the Bologna Process in order to synchronize its system of academic degrees and with the European standards. Currently, each year the university enrolled about 10,000 students, including about 750 foreign students from more than 80 countries worldwide. The academic year is divided into 2 semesters: the first lasts from early October to late January, the second - from the beginning of February to the end of June.
